City A

Government Girl   by Melissa Justis

Dear Government Girl,

Everyone in my group has totally bailed and I feel like I'm stuck with all of the work. No one cares about our project and people barely show up to the meetings. I don't want to sound bossy or nerdy but these people need to HELP me out!

 → Ditched by My Department

Dear “Ditched by my Department”,

Being a part of a group project is a very difficult process. I would first start off by letting the group know how you feel.  In a respectful way, let them know that you don’t want to pull all the weight throughout the group.  Remind the department that their grade is going to suffer, as well as other groups because of their lack of work.  When a person doesn’t show up to the meetings frequently, you should then get involved and ask questions. Ask why they were not present. Then, proceed by telling them that they will be scheduling the next meeting, being that the meeting is now at a convenience for them, and they don’t have an excuse not to come. If all of this fails, contact your teacher, either on CreekConnect or in class, and let them know how you feel, as well as how much work you’ve been doing.

Dear Government Girl,

I'm really nervous about the City Council meeting we have to attend. I don't like public speaking and especially do not want to look stupid on T.V. What if Alan Green, the mayor, asks me a question I don't know the answer to? What if I cannot remember anything?

Please help me

 → Council Confused

Dear Council Confused,

The best way to conquer a fear is to relax.  When you attend the meeting, be sure to take notes and be very attentive throughout the meeting. If you stay active within the meeting, then you will be able to answer a question if you are asked.  If you are really very nervous about answering questions on television, simply arrive early to the meeting, and try and speak with the mayor briefly. Explain the situation that you are in, and I’m sure he will help you through it, or give you some advice.

Love, Government Girl

Dear Government Girl,

No one in my group can work together. We do not agree on anything, and it is hard to tell some people their ideas do not make any sense and I do not know how to nicely tell them.

 → Disagreeable Department

Dear Disagreeable Department,

Have you thought that maybe taking a step back and reexamining the situation might help? Reconsider the ideas that you think are stupid.  Many people don’t like their ideas being put down. If you feel like your ideas are being argued upon, maybe it is time for the entire team to compromise. When working in a group, not everyone is going to like what you say. On top of that, not everything you say goes. Take the time to think about what others are saying, and come to a mutual agreement.

Dear Government Girl,

I really don't like the department I am in. Though I know I am stuck in this department what are some ways to make it better?

 → SGD Blues

Dear SGD Blues,

Many people have become frustrated with Student Government Day. Stay positive, and keep working hard. SGD is coming to an end, don’t give up now!

Love, Government Girl

Dear Government Girl,

I don't know how to dress for anything that has to do with SGD! I am a girl and don't know if I should go full out dress or just pants and a shirt.

 → Nothing to Wear

Dear Nothing to Wear,

Be sure that you are aware of your environment. If people around you tend to dress more business casual, then don’t be afraid to do so.  If people tend to dress more professionally and conservative, then do not hesitate to do so. Talk to your department group, and get feedback on what they are planning to wear, that way you all look somewhat the same.  *Remember: It is always better to be overdressed.
